New mamas returning to work after maternity leave can use all the help and support they can get from the colleagues, friends, and mentors in their lives. I am grateful today to Susan Smith Blakely of Best Friends at the Bar for featuring my article on her blog: What Happens After Maternity Leave Is a Challenging Experience.
Though written for lawyers, this post provides practical tips for anyone on how to effectively mentor women who are coming back to work after maternity leave, including:
- Believing in her for the long haul and reminding her of her strengths;
- Encouraging her to take credit at work for a well-planned leave and return; and
- Helping her connect with other returning mamas.
Read more of the post here, and share this link with any woman or man you know who may be in a position to mentor a new working mama!

Lori- I too am a lawyer mom in the dc area, and i’ll Be returning to work next month (March 2019) after 4.5 months off. Do you have any mommy lawyer groups in the dc area (nova and Rockville included) that you recommend?
Thanks for your comment, Lisa, and good luck with your return! If you’re not already in the Law Mamas group on FB, you should ask to join. Then PM me from in there, and I’ll connect you to the person who coordinates the in-person meet-ups in DC. (There’s a group that meets every so often for lunch.) The Mindful Return program also always has tons of lawyer mamas in it – would love to have you in the session starting March 4, if you’re interested! (www.mindfulreturn.com/e-course)
